@Doctor-Phibes said in "I'm a Lumberjack and I'm...": The thought of me cutting down my own tree is so ridiculous it’s not even something I’d contemplate. We had three taken down when we moved and watching them at work emphasized this point quite strongly. It all depends...If you're working with a tree that's not a problem (clear area to fall, symmetrical limbs) and you're just trying to get it on the ground, it's not too hard. Just don't try it on a windy day. I do keep a 100' cable out in the shop, just in case we have to pull one. You do that for pulling through limbs on other trees or when you really want one to fall in a small, designated spot. You tie your cable up the trunk fifteen feet or so, then pull with a winch, come-along or with a tractor, as the cut is being made. Depending on the tree, I may have to add one or two 25' chains to the cable for length. But tight corners around the house? Having to top one out and take it in pieces? I grit my teeth and let the guys with the equipment do the work. Last big pine took a crane and cost me $1800.

I have no problem with this. Some of the congregation should have helped the priest.

For me it was none of those ages. It was the 90s. Economy was going gangbusters, the Cold War was over, no real challenges to the world order were present, and Islam hadn’t really reared its foul head yet. Domestic politics were tame. Hell, Dole ran to the left of Clinton on a couple of issues. Those things seem objectively true and demonstrably superior to what we faced in prior decades and the decades since.

More sad news from that messed up country. Three people, a Haitian man and an American couple who all worked for a Christian mission organization, were killed by gang members near Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Thursday night (May 23). The group had reportedly been kidnapped earlier in the evening after leaving a youth event hosted at a church. Natalie and Davy Lloyd moved from Oklahoma to Haiti in 2022 to work for Missions in Haiti, Inc. The third person killed was the Haitian director of the organization, Jude Montis. Davy’s parents, David and Alicia Lloyd, who founded the organization in 2000, shared the news of their death in a Facebook post around 2 a.m. Friday, saying the couple had been shot by gang members around 9 p.m. https://religionnews.com/2024/05/24/american-missionary-couple-haitian-mission-director-killed-by-gangs-in-haiti/

I've seen a few like these, my son was supercharged when he was small. The most memorable one was hearing him falling down the quite steep stairs and seeing him face-planting hard right onto the tiled entrance at the bottom. We were both horrified and wondering about a potential hospital visit - he took a second, then got up and shouted "THAT WAS GREAT!!!!". We had to stop him from doing it again.

@Jolly said in New-School Parenting is Old-School Parenting: Jobs in nursing school? Ward clerk, ER tech, ... Something in the hospital. But keep your eyes on the prize. The goal is to graduate and pass the boards. Yeah, she's front desk right now, but they want to put her in the back as a med assistant. She's working on getting trained for that now. She's looking around at hospitals, but if any of that falls through, her current place likes the idea she's in school and is willing to work with her schedule on it, so there are worse situations.

@Renauda said in National Urban Rat Summit: All I know is that I have never in my life seen a wild rat here. I've never seen a wild rat here either. I've seen mice, chipmunks, skunks, deer, bears, possums, turkeys, foxes, coyotes, raccoons, rabbits a-plenty as well as all the rest of the standard fauna. But never a rat. Maybe they're in disguise. Sneaky buggers.

I've never made it all the way to the end of a basketball game. It's a bit like golf in that respect except there are a lot less Scottish people doing it, presumably because of the height disadvantage they'd suffer.
